In
October of 1986 in Miami, Florida, a notice appeared in the newspaper inviting
those interested in sailing, whether they were a boat owner or not, to
attend a meeting to discuss organizing a sailing group. About 30
people showed up and our group was consequently formed and named the "Miami
Singles Sailing Club". We originally met at peoples' homes until
the group got too big and we started finding other places to meet.
These places included meeting rooms at Denny's, Miami Yacht Club, Coral
Gables Country Club, Holiday Inn, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, and the Raddison Inn Kendall.
In August, 1992, Hurricane Andrew played havoc with our club, which had grown to a membership of 105. Two of our captains lost their boats and one had to completely rebuild his boat inside and out. Some of our members lost their homes and many had severe damage. As a result, many moved out of the area and others were trying to rebuild their lives. We lost half our members at that time but now we have the 100 members again.
In August of 1992, we realized we had changed from a singles group to a mixed group, including couples. We decided the name needed to be changed and we became the "Biscayne Bay Sailing Club". We do most of our sailing in Biscayne Bay, which is a beautiful area to sail. We enjoy sailing, rafting up to socialize, swimming and snorkeling. We also have overnight sails to some of the islands in the Biscayne National Park, such as Elliot Key and Boca Chita. We have canoed on the Loxahatchee River, in the Everglades and down the Coral Gables waterway. There have been bike/picnic trips to Shark Valley. We have had progressive dinners, luaus, Super Bowl parties and weekends in the Keys where we fished and snorkeled. Our membership is made up of people of all ages and professions, with a love of water, sailing and socializing.
We
are a non-profit group and keep our dues and sail costs low, enabling anyone
that wants to sail to do so. We meet the fourth Thursday of each
month @ 6:30 p.m. The meeting place changes, so please check our "Calendar" for the location. Come join us for drinks, hors d' oeuvres, short
meeting and socializing.
